COVER ILLUSTRATIONS/LOGOS
When I first joined the Press as an intern, I immediately saw the problem of inconsistency in their designs. Previous magazine issues had bits and pieces of good design, but they appeared few and far in between and seemed disjointed. After talking to the editor-in-chief, I learned that the Press team always had a particular edge they want to carry out as the alternative student publication on campus. Thus, the main issue to solve was to maintain "the Press feel" as well as artistic variety. I started by changing the logo.
COVER IMAGES
Nobody at the Press was proficient in Photoshop prior to my entry, and so I naturally stepped in to create artworks for the magazine. The cover illustration is by the most important piece of artwork as it creates a focus for the paper; it also serves as the attention-grabber. Thus, the covers had to match the articles' positions.
In this example, the story was about how the sorry state of the Stony Brook Union building---less dedicated personnel, broken structures, etc. I took a photo of the building's banner and added grime in post to illustrate the article's point. Considering the image was just a grimy photo of the banner, readers would not have known the story was about the Union's situation. Therefore, I enlarged the typeface to emphasize the direction of the article. I still used Century Gothic for its neutrality as a typeface.
