Landscape Architecture in Athens

This diploma project is focused on an intervention strategy on an existent, old but quite abandoned military camp placed near the southeastern suburbs of Athens. Through the course of this project, an attempt is presented to reform this area into a grassy landscape that shall provide a “green yard” of relaxation to the nearby hospital complex, to the healthcare center of kids with cancer also called “The Flame” and also work as large park for outdoor activities for the surrounding area. The first part of this work is dedicated to the understanding of the circumstances that occurred in the past and led to the current situation of this area. There is a historical analysis background of the area and references to important events that changed the future of this piece of land. After the problematic current situation of this area is presented, some examples are set based on European cases that used successfully the legislation about reusing military camps in order to provide housing, parks, outdoor and cultural activities or even create whole new ecological cities. This part proceeds with the presentation of some different cases of implementing this legislation in Greece and the results of these acts, with the most important of those to be the one presented by our University of EMP in Athens under the instructions of the well-known, in this area of study, professors N.Mpelabilas, G.Polyzos, F.Batabali. This part closes with a conclusion on what a park dedicated to kids really needs and how it is supposed to work in real circumstances. The next part of the Diploma project presents the architectural study of the new park to be placed in the area, architectural drawings, sketches and architectural models in scale.
