Graphic design: it’s the one medium where I can envision something and bring it to life in ways that affect people in broadbut subtle ways. Heavily influenced by music, fine art, and personal experiences, my action sports work is the embodiment of me and what I would like to see in that industry: gritty, spirited, and fearless designs that are so much a part of an athlete’s performance and self-expression.
When I was a child, skulls and skeletons terrified me. But sometime during adolescence, I conquered that fear and instead became obsessed with Dia de Los Muertos, reveling in the Mexican stance that not only acknowledges the inevitability of death, but celebrates a person's passing, contrary to most American traditions. The Los Muertos campaign is my fusion of the taboo cultures of skateboarding and that macabre holiday, a jarring juxtaposition of stark skulls and floral patterns that reminds us to embrace new perspectives.
My life is saturated by music; every moment is an opportunity to quote a song or hum a measure .The brash, assymetrical compositions of these shirts are synthetic representations of the melodies and percussion that form the backdrop to the lyrics.
Boardshorts area  dime a dozen; few really stand out. I gave a colorful twist to original sketches for a playful pair of shorts. The custom gradients and patterns offer options to riders who want to stand out from the crowd.
Everyone recognizes the reggae influence in the surfing community, which has also influenced me on many artistic levels. The color blocking in these pieces maintains the connection to reggae, but does so in a clean, graphic fashion.
With this women's snowboard line, I created gear that would be more appealing to the less "girly" snowboarder. The shards of orange and fuchsia contrast against the black, giving it an edgier look than the majority of women's gear out there today.
I grew up in LA, and love it in a way that only natives comprehend. The City of Angels is not heaven, it's a chaotic metropolis that has everything: the good and the bad, the glitter and the shadows, the glory of the studio lots and the violence of the underworld. The various elements grind against their shifting fault lines much like the color blocks and photographic elements of these pieces, creating a unique friction.
Influenced by nature, my board designs are inspired by everything from sunsets to shark attacks. Experimenting with color-work, patterns, and clean design, I've created boards that stand out on the rack and on the water, boards that appeal to the amateur and the professional alike.
Surfing doesn't normally "celebritize" its athletes the way other sports do, but I wanted to celebrate Kelly Slater and his tenth world championship with something more striking than the standard action shots. Most surf magazine covers feature a rider on a board in the middle of a wave, 200 yards from shore. We've seen that before, and Kelly Slater, as an iconic athlete deserved better than that. The spreads featured shows my technical development of the cover.
I am currently in the exciting yet arduous task of redoing my portfolio. Here's a little sneak peak of what's on the way!
