"Getting Better" Poster

Getting Better (originally The Beatles: Great to Greater) is a 36 x 24 inch poster. This project came at a time when my college was changing presidents. Our professor wanted to reflect this change and welcome the new president with a series of posters under the theme "Great to Greater" (our last president was great, but this one is even greater!). The Beatles' career is a fabulous example of something great becoming greater. The Liverpool lads caused Beatlemania and had the world hooked on their music in a few short years of touring. When they stepped away from touring and focused on their studio albums, their careers elevated to the next level. That period from 1967-1970 is the reason The Beatles are the greatest rock band ever.
I wanted to portray this graphically. I illustrated the 1964 mop-top, matching-suit Beatles sitting atop the 1967 Sgt. Pepper Beatles. They were soon to be of colossal importance to the music industry. The Beatles evolved at this time, but of course their past few years would be on their minds as they moved forward. One of the most important decisions I made was the limitation to three colors: a dark brown, a watery blue, and a vivid red. The color choices help the composition move away from previous Beatles artwork and give the boys a cohesive mood.
Eventually the "Great to Greater" posters were hung for the new president's arrival. I also submitted the poster to York College's Student Exhibition in 2014, juried by PostTypography. Not only was it accepted, but it also received a "Judges Faves" award.
