THE /            / CORRIDOR
The Corridor reintroduces the shaken city of Christchurch to the river that is at its heart. The great loss that Christchurch has experienced is irreplaceable however there now is an opportunity to create a positive outcome from these traumatic events. The Corridor proposes to revive the fading relationship between Christchurch city and the environment returning the red zone along the Avon River into an ecologically diverse and thriving green zone/ urban park. The project will become a modern icon of the city providing a peaceful, open, and safe space for the public to enjoy and celebrate. An integral part to the design is the reintroduction of wetlands (natural water filtering systems), native plants and wildlife promoting a rebuild of an ecologically sustainable city. The design is comprised of a series of small detailed timber structures, walkways, seating and small boathouses integrated within the wetland. These structures create spaces for recreation, meeting and eating, and act as small built corridors within the larger design. The Corridor aims to return a piece of Christchurch to what it was like, and explores a sustainable vision for the city’s future. This design will become an asset that will set Christchurch apart as a city at peace with its environment.
