To help promote our guest speaker and juror of our annual Best of Ringling show, I was asked to design posters announcing his arrival. This year’s speaker was James Sholley of Commercial Artisan. When I set out to design the poster I looked thoroughly through his work online. In designing his poster I wanted to introduce his style. He is strictly a classic print designer for the modern time. I chose a classical setting of type to an ornate background but treated it in a modern way.
From what I found his designs very clean and well-thought out but also ornate. His work had a feeling that it was hand made or printed using letter presses. I wanted these posters to resemble that feeling and to help introduce his work/style further to the school. I used a classical way to set type but combined it with more modern typefaces such as Univers and Gotham but as an accent I used a classic style serif: Bell. Then I set this against an ornate background image but use high contrasting colors to separate the text from the background.
