Visual Merchandising: Head in The Cloud

"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening." - Coco Chanel Taking inspiration from this, I made a window display for my visual merchandising class.

In the Cloud is the theme of my major display. I got the inspiration from my own blog, which is called Head in the Cloud. I have a blog called Head in the Cloud and an imaginary store on Mock Shop called the same name so I would want to create a window display for my offline store. According to the dictionary, 'head in the cloud' refers to a person who is acting on a whim and living in a fantasy.  My mom used to call me that all the time back when I was little. Therefore, I want to incorporate the elements of elegance, minimalism and fairy tale together into the display to represent my personality as a designer.

In preparation for the display, I bought the batting, silver rhinestone and star stickers in Wal-Mart and borrowed the string light from my friend. Then, I went to buy a few dresses to see which one would best match the theme of my display. I had to change the dress approximately 4 times until it looks just atheistically pleasing to my eyes. First, I handcrafted the hanging clouds by glueing poly-fil batting to the paper lanterns. One of the most difficult tasks is to hang the clouds and the string lights on the ceiling because I was afraid the little ladder is not strong enough to handle my weight. Therefore, I had to be extra careful to avoid falling down and ruining the display. Secondly, I dressed up the mannequins and put on the accessories. After that, I adhered the rhinestones on the walls to create a contrast and a glowing effect of the stars on the black backdrop.

The final display reflected the theme and turned out impressive as I expected. One thing I would do differently is to use another dress with metallic decoration to make the outfit stands out even more among the white tones. Overall, the experience is inspiring for it revealed to me the necessary steps to develop ideas from paper into reality, increased my ability to think creatively and challenged myself to turn regular items into a creative artwork.
