Stains of Memory

Stains of Memory - Flecken der Erinnerung
How can we visualize memory? How can we address to this concept and what is collective memory of a population? For the 300 years anniversary of the Independence of the city of Barcelona, me and other students at the Free University of Bozen were asked to celebrate the collective memory of the Catalans through a colorful Sketchbook.

Memory is part of identity, it has to do with our subconscious and images which are captured in our everydaylife. I have always find the theme memory fascinating, something in movement and in transformation. Something liquid and indefinite as a stain.

The aim was to reproduce monuments, places, objects belonging to the Barcelona's landscape with reference to our subconscious. The result is a collection of colorful stains created by drops of inkblot which tends to recreate the psychological Rorschach's test whose purpose is to reveal the personality of the patient.

The images are always symmetrical and mirrored after a well-detailed observation of the material "ink". The source is always reality: every image derives from photographs, street logos, inspirations taken during my trip in the city.

The rhythm and the content of the book are characterized by some selected quotations of the architect and artist Antonio Gaudì.

The sketchbook is firtsly dedicated to the Catalans and to whoever knows Barcelona or would like to play and experiment with the test!
