Brief 2 - Invitation for a Fashion Event
This is a portfolio of my second brief for my Specialist Illustration class. For this one, I have decided to create an invitation for a Fashion Event. For this project, I'm going to have to create an Invitation and an information sheet for an evening fashion event.
I have made a Pinterest board to support my research and to get inspiration for the invitation I'm going to create.
The link to the Pinterest board is here.
After I have done some research, I got a brief idea of what I want my invitation to look like. I really liked the idea of bordering the invitation, even with a simple line, like on the one below. I think it gives it that nice look and make it stand out a bit more and also makes the overall invitation more minimalistic.
I also really liked the composition of colours in this invitation above. I think it looks really fresh and makes it look less formal, and welcoming. It probably also gives the guest the idea of the theme of wedding a bit more.
So after some research I have decided to sketch my invitation and get an overall idea of how I want it to look like. For this sample I have only used pencil because at this stage I already knew that I'm going to use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to edit and add colour to my project.
This is the sketch of the invitation. It is quite messy, but I only made it to give me and idea of what I want my invitation to look like.
So, I took inspiration from my Pinterest research and I have chosen to make the boarders for my invitation.
I have also decided that my invitaton will be in the A5 format.
I'm aiming to go for a kind of informal design, but still glamour.
Step 1:
I have created a new file in Photoshop. I went for International Paper, size A3. I have rotated the page 90 degrees.
For the border colour I have chosen baby pink, and for the background colour, grass-colour green, a bit toned with shade close to the boarders.
Step 2:
I have opened a sepereate page in Photoshop. I have scanned the drawing of a diamond I done earlier one and cleared it in Illustrator. Then, opened it in Photoshop and edited it. I have changed the colour of outlines from black to grey/silver. I have filled the shape in with baby blue colour and added shadows and highlights to it.
Step 3:
I have pasted the diamond into my invitation and added some shades around it so it doesn't look blunt.
Step 4:
Next, I have added text to my invitation. The text content is all the necessary information about this event, address, time and date. I have chosen a few different fonts for the text to make it look a bit more effective. I have also decided that the text will be white to contrast with the green background and make it stand out, also, I thought that it will be easier to read. Text on the diamond is dark grey as white was a bit too light and was blending in with the blue diamond which didn't look good.
Step 5:
For this step I have decided I'm going to add a bit more life to my invitation. I drew floral borders to add to it. I'm including a scan of the fine line pen drawing (rough) below.
The next thing that I have done, was pasting this image to Adobe Photoshop. I cledared it out with an eraser and then used the Levels tool, to contrast it more, and get rid of the grey background. By using this option in Photoshop, I have achieved a clear illustration without any pencil marks or other unwanted interuptions.

Then, I opened the cleared out drawing in Adobe Illustrator. I have used the Trace Image tool to make the drawing look like a digital illustration. I saved it and opened it in Photoshop again. I changed the colour of the black pen to pale pink and changed the opacity of the drawing to blend it a bit with the border of my invitation. Then, I have placed it on my invitation and adjusted it: I added and deleted some parts of it to make it fit and look nice and neat.
For the back of my invitation I have decided to make something simple, yet effective and pretty. I went for the same colour background and used the flower border I have used for the main page of my invitation. I also used the diamond I drew and edited in Photoshop.
After some adjustments and changes, I have finished my invitation. Below I'm  including the finished invitation in A4 format. I decided to print it on the a4 white card.
Step 6:
Next part of this brief is to create a programme for the event. I have started with the inside pages of the programme: The event I have created the invitation for is a fashion show with a floral theme; many garments (or parts of it) from this catwalk are made from flowers,
I have opened an a4 page in Photoshop and flipped it horizontaly. I have placed a line right in the middle in order to divide the page and to know where to fold after printing my programme out. On the first page of it, I have created space for writing; the actual programme of the event, which I'm going to hand write after printing out. On the other side of the page I have inserted the Menu for the dinner that is going to take place after the catwalk. I have included four courses with an option for vegetarians.
For the front and back cover of my programme, I have opened another a4 page in Photoshop and also flipped it horizontal. I also used the same colour as for the inside of it. I have divided the page into two and put the title of the programme on the front page.
Step 9:
Now that I have finished the back and fron cover of my programme I decided to print it out on card and fold it in half, to give it this book/leaflet look.
