Sculpture as a Practice

This project was all about understanding sculpture techniques and concepts, where our final asignment had to be site specific and conceptually moving. After exploring on many concpets, I landend on exploring the feeling of staying alone.  I had never stayed alone before this, and it was a huge journey of ups and downs, pros and cons to staying all by yourself. It seems great in the beginning, to know that all responsibilities, decisions, space and time is all controlled by you. But as time goes on I started getting agitated and restless as I entered home every day.
I took the concept of many thoughts having a dialogue, constantly fighting each other as time goes on by yourself. It always felt like there’s two types of thoughts, ones where it was telling what I should do, and the other ones always finding an excuse to get out of the house.
I thought of making two figures pulling a person in the middle from both sides, representing the same way my thoughts felt. I wanted to use the same materials that I connect to, both inside the house and outside, and use them for creating both sculpture. I was not too sure what material I would use for the sculpture in the middle, which got carried along till the last day.
I first started by making the wireframes for both the figures pulling, and used GI write and welded them in a posture that showed them pulling a rope. It had been quite some time since I had done welding so this took quite
some time, getting both the pieces upright and sturdy.
I wanted to use cloth for the figure inside the room, as that was one of the materials I relate to the most when I am inside my house. I chose five different colours of cloth, that had a gradient to it, and started wrapping the sculpture with them, yet making sure it had a folded crumpled feeling to it. I didn’t want to make a head for both the sculptures, so I used a frying pan for the head, as it was also one of those objects I use at home a lot.
The second figure took me while to figure out, as I wanted to use objects that I use outside the house, things like cigarette boxes, chips wrappers, and coke bottles. It was confusing as to how all these objects would come together, but I was pretty satisfied by the way the sculpture came out
The last sculpture was where I personally felt like I could have done a better job. I really wanted to see how paper Mache’ would work with P.O.P. , but didn’t exactly know how the P.O.P. would stick to the newspaper. After many trials , I realized that the POP sticks well if the sculpture is wrapped
around with gauze, giving something for the pop to stick and hold to. The form came out pretty well, but the finish wasn’t as good as I had expected.
This sculpture really challenged me in many ways from getting a concept, to using different materials I am not used to, to creating three such large sculptures to depict what I wanted to show. I wish I had a clearer understanding of how I was going to make them like adding the POP, but I was glad that everything finally came together, and projected what I was going through those five weeks.
