Change Direction

THE MESSAGE

The 'Change Direction' print is based on a quote by Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher and poet: "If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”

Making a conscious decision to challenge and look for improvements can release unexpected forces in your work and life. By taking the time to identify and implement positive change, it will help you from becoming too comfortable and open you up to opportunities you cannot yet imagine.

Each print is silkscreened by hand with rich paint on thick white cover stock. This print will encourage you to take on new mindsets and avoid stagnation in life and work. By challenging yourself to do what is different or unknown, you’re opening doors to new ideas and perspectives.

PROCESS

I decided to take a somewhat abstract direction to this print in terms of its meaning. My first few ideas were to include either a road, a map or a compass as my main image because they all acted as direction indicators. I created a few rough sketches to see if these ideas would work, but I was not happy with any of the results.

Then I sat down and did some research behind why, as humans, we don't change.  I learned that we tend to stick to what we know and we hide behind what is comfortable. This is how I got the idea to use flora as the imagery. The stark white text is placed in the centre and is strong and firm. It is breaking free from the flora (aka, the things we are comfortable with).
