Freehand Magazine

Freehand Magazine was based on a project given at the design department at San Francisco State University. The project guidelines was to come up with a fictitious magazine and design all of its content consisting of a masthead, cover page, table of contents page, a feature story page, and a six page spread of the feature story.
Focusing on hand-lettering and typography as a main feature, the design/ art magazine offers inspiration and insight into the creative world by offering interviews with leading designers and highlights various works of different artists to offer inspiration. The attempt in the magazine was to make clean, simple, and bold, while being easy to read and follow.
Full bleed images and small body text offers inspiration for readers to get inspired. This image is of hand-lettering and typography artist Gemma O'Brien.
Opening feature page is bold and simple in offering the main feature story in the magazine.
The process for the masthead including sketching many various iterations with different tools. To embody the name of the magazine, I wanted the title to be handmade. Bottom images show my iterations with different markers and pens with the final version.
Much like the masthead, the cover followed the same concept. Wanting the embody the same meaning, all the contents excluding the body text was drawn out either in Illustrator or sketched on paper. Images show early renditions of the front cover and assets that were used or either left out towards the end of the project.
