Over the first two weeks of the Letter Workshop class at the Maryland Institute College of Art, we learned how to draw blackletter typefaces of the Fraktur calligraphic hand using a parallel pen. The project began with us learning how to control the pen to generate the strokes that combined to form the letterforms. We then proceeded to draw Rundgotisch, Schwabacher and Gilgengart typefaces. The project culminated with us writing the names of the cities in alphabetical order in Gilgengart. This piece shows my process for the project from start to finish.

The class is taught by Jason Mannix, one of the founders of Polygraph, a design studio in Washington, D.C.
