Otherness
These photographs evokes the ambivalence between the way we want to be perceived by others and how the image we create of ourselves alters who we are. Each image reflects the fact that we are living in a society dominated by the image so we are conscious of its impact. This statement make us conscious of our image and that every pictures taken are aimed to be seen by others thus to be interpreted and judged.Photography is used a way to identify ourselves physically but also our personality through our gestures and expressions. That’s why in front of the camera, we are acting to transmit a certain image which corresponds more to what we want to be than what we actually are. The sight of others generates the construction of an other self which is carefully and consciously thought. This mask we are hiding behind permits to deceive others and protect ourselves from others’ sight. In these pictures, each person is represented as a caricature by deforming and exaggerating the lines of the face. It creates a sensation of strangeness which aims to ask ourselves about our relation to our own image.
