D&AD New Blood - Monotype Tarantino

Create a new visual for film advertising. One that relies on and relishes words, instead of failing back on the usual photographic imagery.
Take a director of your choice and use the power of type to promote a retrospective screening of their films.
An event difficult to ignore and would be inspiring people to go see them.

Tarantino has a strong sense of style within his set of films. Famously known for his edgy, bloody, revenge films.
Also considered by many as a master of Dialouge. The 3 films selected were Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained.

To communicate his style to the audience through type. I researched the styling of old hard-boiled novels and some western cowboy posters.
Additionally, selecting traits of the violence seen in Tarantino’s films. Such as blood pools,
splatters and explosions. As well as the movements of bullets.
From old western styling and Tarantino films as well would tend to use slab-serif. So for each film’s title, I decide to use the font, Alfa Slab One.
Then styling them to their respective film colour and other minor detail difference.
To characterize Tarantino’s styling, Tarantino’s name in the center designed appropriately
like a ‘!‘. Emphasizing the loud nature of Tarantino’s films.
Besides styling to Tarantino visual language, I wanted to also communicate the dialouges of
his films. So then narrowing down the dialouges to the most interesting and non-spoiler of all,
then trying to make use of them.
These are the final posters that combines a balance of each of the elements of Tarantino’s style.
With the ‘!’ right in the center, blood and dialouge along with the details to the event.
Similar to the their poster, with the arrangement of the element. The biggest highlight and difference from the poster is the slow-mo blood-dialouge explosion,
all while being played with each films recognisable song. The film and event details being the main focus while dialouge lines remain blurry in the background.

The Inglourious Basterds video play to the Inglourious Basterd soundtrack #4 ‘Slaughter‘. The black tone of the blood making
relation to the saying of nazi blood being black ooze. Contrast to the real human blood red background.
The Pulp Fiction video play to a more up beat tone. Playing over it’s signature music of Mirsilou by Dick Dale.
Appropriately the yellow and red representing the ketchup and mustard in a burger and food scattered all over the film.
The Django Unchained video is the western of the bunch and older looking. Playing over to John Legends’s Who Did That To You.
While the overall visual is straightforward with blood and ink on old gritty paper background like a wanted poster.
Posters and video can be advertised at the cinema. Other than that, giant blood splatter mural in public areas
like the subway could attract alot of attention from public.
On the cinema’s website, banners for the films would also be promoting the events nights as well.
When clicked on, the blood splatter then activates with all the details of the events.
