The responsive eye is a research and an editorial project made for my bachelor's degree at Politecnico di Torino.
My aim was to approach and examine in depth two topics which I'm really interested in: sailing and graphic design.
In the early XX century these two disciplines bumped one into the other and generated an innovative and efficient camouflage strategy called dazzle camouflage in order to avoid the german submarine attacks. It was born in Great Britain in 1919 and then it has been adopted and developed by the U.S. Navy until 1945.
The graphics on the ships are really similar to the Op Art works, this is the reason why I decided to make a comparison between this movement and the dazzle camouflage. Even if for different reasons, both were thought to deceive the human eye.
The title of this projects reminds the name of the very first exposition of optical art at MoMA of New York, which took place in 1965. The subheading explains that the optical illusion has been really useful to the navy activity during WWI and WWII,

To broadcast the reasearch I decided to use a layout based on the pilot books which are on board on any sailing or motor yacht.
A stencil monospaced typography is used for titles in order to reproduce the navy style.
For the cover I used a natural cardboard on which a dazzle pattern and the title had been silk screen printed.
