Cornerstone Workshop

ABOUT

The project takes into account on these issues about nostalgia in Singapore:

1) Romanticism of Singapore’s past: did we really experience some of them and why do we long to?

2) What are the children of today going to be nostalgic for?

3) Are common icons of nostalgia a credible in representing the past?

4) What is truly made and designed in Singapore by Singaporeans?

With these ideas in mind, I have decided to create a workshop which is largely themed around these issues.

The Workshop offers job opportunities for the craftsmen and experienced retirees while imparting rare and culturally significant knowledge to a younger generation of youths.

As a workshop, it works as a space to facilitate apprenticeships  where the younger, passionate generation could learn traditional crafts with direct guidance from the older generation of craftsmen in order to preserve these traditional art forms.

Cornerstone Definition

A Cornerstone is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. It plays a crucial role in architecture since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.

As such, the name cornerstone is to suggest the importance of heritage and traditions as the basis of culture. Cornerstone seeks to document these traditions to set it in stone and aid in accurately incorporating them to the next generation.

Products and Services

The workshop offers classes taught by the older generation who are willing to pass down their knowledge and skills to a younger generation. Workshop not only contained to handicraft but also culinary skills and age-old recipes on making local food to be taught.

Mission Statement

1) Remembering the traditions as the foundations of society.

2) Perservation of what we have now.

3) Encouraging / developing more personal and interpersonal nostalgia through more interactions between craftsmen/ elders from the past and youths of today
Branding Collaterials

1) Kit to contain materials and tools in a workshop (example being that of a bamboo kite workshop).

2) Brochure to promote classes.

3) Posters to promote various events and classes for the workshop.

4) Wrapping materials for customer's projects and sheet-based materials in class.

5) A publication recording the design and research process for the project.
