NIKON HYPE. RETHINKING THE OLD.

Tech is evolving rapidly and smartphone industries are minimizing buttons on mobile devices. Because of such changes, many smartphones are losing the emotional aspect of the camera characteristics. For example, apple’s photo button is overlapped with the volume button. If you are not a frequent apple user, you may not know there is a camera feature that is hidden within the volume button. This is a short experimental project that explores the boundaries of the progressing smart phone and the tactile camera button.

HOW DO YOU TAKE A PICTURE?

Due to eliminating “The unnecessary”, it is quite difficult for a person to take a picture comfortably with their smartphones. There is a great chance of dropping it. Current solution of applying camera button into the screen is actually not that great for the user experience, and it feels too cold for capturing your special moment. So why not celebrate the camera button?

A BLEND OF ANALOG AND DIGITAL

Celebrating the analog camera button with touch features. The camera button, sits at the top left corner of the smart phone, seamlessly integrated into the surface aesthetics of the smart phone. You can swipe up, down, left, and right on the button to control camera and image gallery.

RESEMBLANCE OF NIKON 1

Same color, material, and finishes are brought from the NIKON 1 camera, to represent a modern aesthetic.

FRONT FACED SPEAKER

Sound flow is significantly enhanced due to re positioning of the speaker to the front.

Aesthetics and form are pushed through an accentuated bullet radius. The frame is shaped more like a bullet to emphasize its thinness. Buttons are anodized aluminum, while edges are shaved to create a surface in order to expose the raw material as a visual accent.

The bottom of Hype is designed with a flat surface, but with enough surface area for the IOs. Transition from flat edge to bullet shape edge is nicely executed.
