ScrapTrack

Scrap Track is an interactive installation inside Peenya Metro Station. Our principle point of building this specific installation is to draw in each individual coming to Peenya hence fourth the area, beside the ticket counter. The basic principle of this installation was to develop an interactive piece using industrial scrap. Most of the track and its other components for example, the pulleys are used sanding brushes.
The course was based on making installations from industrial scrap at Peenya Metro Station, Bangalore. Through this course we began to understand what an installation is, exploring different examples which saw us making small rapid prototypes.
After a site visit to the Peenya metro station, we started to explore the location and trying to imagine what could be installed at that point. After selecting few locations, we started generating our concepts and came up with the concept of pinball structure depicting a commuter’s journey through the metro station. After selecting the scrap, we started to work on the structure. It was a challenging task to complete the structure in such a short time. Finally the structure stood working in the Metro premises.

An interactive installation in Peenya Metro Station, Bangalore.

Since our location (Peenya) is an industrial area we decided to use industrial scrap to govern the structure of our installations. We started out with exploring the space, then came up with ideas which were mainly kinetic or interactive installations. We also toyed around with the idea of making a rock climbing structure overlapped by the map of Bangalore Metro. This lead to showcasing to the passengers a journey through the metro station with the existing art installations using a pinball structure.
After fixing the location, we started working on the elements to include in the structure, making a CAD model and also a prototype. After selecting the scrap and seeing the possibilities of the available materials, we had to see how we could incorporate it in the installation. Also we worked on simplifying the mechanism to take the ball on the top
