The brief was to create a unique illustrative cover for Little White Lies Magazine for the D&AD awards 2012. The approach I took to this was to look at the nature of the film and take the calm, calculated, contemplative approach to solving a puzzle. The main character George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is following the tracks of the suspects in order to piece together the puzzle. It seemed natural then to create an image that resembled a pin map.
The lines that make up the face were all stitched into acetate over a schematic. This was then applied to a chess board themed background that had stencils of the countries featured in the film to apply some shading to the face.
