Traditions
Hotel created in an existing warehoue space
Syracuse, New York

For this project we had to design a hotel inspired by an existing brand. Working with a group, the brand we chose was ‘The W’ by the Starwood group. However, we chose to develop the brand by adapting it to fit the target market of a visiting family. We chose this target market due to our site being The Warehouse, a building which is located close to the heart of downtown Syracuse, New York and within walking distance and on bus routes from Syracuse University. Our brand inspiration of ‘The W’ was also chosen as their aesthetics fit with the image of downtown Syracuse better than those of other brands we researched, whilst their attention to details to try and tie various spaces together appealed to us as we were aware of the difficulties of trying to unify different design and aesthetic styles.

As group we settled upon a colour scheme, and chose a local flower – a clematis – to be our motif. This motif can be seen in the logo we designed and throughout the hotel as a pattern to be used on walls panels, tables, chairs, and lighting fixtures. It also added to our idea to bring nature into the hotel through plants to firstly liven up the spaces, but secondly to be used to provide views where downtown Syracuse could not.

Our concept statement for this project was:
With warm, bright, and inviting spaces geared towards interaction, coupled with typical amenities found in most hotels, we will create a hotel branch that will perfectly cater to the needs and wants of families with children.

I designed the bar, the café, and the bathroom lobby.
