Kiosk, new construction in an existing mall
Syracuse, New York

This was a conceptual project for which, using a local mall as our site, we were required to design a kiosk that provided a service or product to elderly mall-walkers. We collaborated with another Interior Design student and a Communications Design student.

Our concept was to create an organization for the elderly community which promoted a better, more well-rounded lifestyle. This included mental, social and physical aspects, enhanced through trips and classes, taken locally.

We assigned ourselves three rules by which we had to design the kiosk, and they were that the design had to incorporate movement and action, and had to utilize technology to the fullest extent. And as we were in collaboration with a Communications Design student, the organization’s image and brand had to always inform design.

For this project we had to research materials that fit our concept and rules, but also that took into account our target market and how they moved around spaces. We chose to make the kiosk out a single piece of curved resin that was lit from the floor. The idea was that this would brighten up the dull colour scheme of the mall, but still allowed the kiosk to draw attention to itself. The use of resin allowed that the natural light from the mall filtered in, allowing for a space that was partially enclosed and felt private, but not claustrophobic.

Additionally, we designed seating that could be pushed together under the table so as to stay out of the way when required. The chairs are also hollow so that they are light-weight - and thus easier to move, and can be used as storage when required. The back slide up and down so that they are easier to store, but do not lack the comfort of a standard chair.
