Textures of the Tundra

I visited Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area end of january 2016. Typical winter weather up in the tundra is either storm or freezing cold temperatures. I happened to be extremely lucky and visit the vast frozen desert with the most beautiful weather.

Pöyrisjärvi wilderness area is one of the most remote areas in North-Finland with limited acces.
During the heart winter you only find a handful of people up there. Mostly reindeer herders and ptarmigan hunters.

Close to Norwegian border fence tundra lanscape reveals itself as a vast silent arctic desert where only few species can thrive.
Polar stratospheric clouds, also known as "Mother of pearl" clouds appeared in the sky before sunrise and coloured most of the sky for two days straight.
Norwegian border fence is high as 4,5 metres in some point but due to heavy blizzards it's only visible for 1.5 metres above the frosty surface.

Lake Pöyrisjärvi changes its surface daily due to heavy winds. With dense blizzards it can get higher snow dunes during the winter months
