Fiber Artwork: Snake Quilt

Snake Quilt: Lourdes, Jenson, Carmen and Cleo
A wall quilt made for the "pet-parent" of the above four snakes.
I have been making quilts similar to this one for many years. I enjoy using iron-on fusible interfacing to position fabric as a type of fiber collage. The technique came after taking an advanced figure drawing course in college, where I used thread and incorporated sewing on canvas and paper instead of using charcoal and graphite.
The finished quilt hanging in the home. The quilt depicts all four snakes in an enclosure similar to their own: Tree branch and cave retreat, wood chip floor covering, and water dish.
In this image, I am securing the fabric to the main quilt backing.
Quilt is being prepared for final binding after backing was secured and then finish detail thread work and painting details were added to snake faces.
Example of the smaller detail of cutting and ironing the fabric to create the color and pattern of the snake prior to finish details. The wood chip pattern for the enclosure floor was done the same way and then sewn over to secure to the quilt.
Detail image of Lourdes...who just happens to be a former Alice Cooper stage snake. Lourdes is a ROCK STAR!
Detail of Carmen who is the second largest snake of the group.
Detail of Jenson and his hide-out.
