Already captured by the beauty of this town, the most Eastern in Italy, and inspired by Roberto Cotroneo novel I went back to Otranto looking for ghosts as ancient as its first name: Hydruntum. In the mid of the noisy and crowded summer, everything recalled to me its bloody history: the siege of the town by a Turkish army and the massacre of all the citizens that followed, five centuries ago. So people watching at the sea were like in front of the enemies fleet, deep shadows in town buildings and rocks were last, desperate refuges, and the preparation of the traditional village festival cast a sinister premonition, as if death was patiently waiting for an occasion to reveal herself.
