Scooterson

Do you remember the joy of your first two-wheeled ride? Chances are you would have been using a kick scooter. Now you can relive the same experience and travel farther in a smarter way, with Scooterson.
 
Scooterson is world's first connected electric kick-scooter.
 
Here is how we designed it.
The design pays homage to icons of popular culture – Batman’s Batpod  by director Christopher Nolan and production designer Nathan Crowley, the Light Cycle of Tron: Legacy by Daniel Simon, Harley Davidson motorbikes (which also inspired us with a name) and… longboards.
Scooterson has a direct-drive, brushless hub motor inside the rear wheel. The batteries, electronics and other components are located in the floor. The silent propulsion makes Scooterson almost pass as a human powered vehicle that magically rolls farther than it should.
The aluminium tubing is Free-Formed in Switzerland. Free-Forming is a technology that allows bending complex geometry with no straights. The aluminium tubes are bent in a succession of radii that enhance structural stiffness of the frame and allow an organic look design. 
The joining components are CNC machined from aerospace grade billet aluminium or magnesium alloy. The tubing and joints are bond together with an adhesive that is 3 times stronger than welding. 
There are no two Scootersons alike. After you make your own color scheme, it is blocked and it can not be selected again by someone else.

We assembled it more than a few times to check tolerances and fitting, then marked bonding surfaces and applied adhesive. We kept the frame under presure with ratchet straps while the glue cured. 
Mudguards, floor and belly are made from carbon reinforced polymer, a sandwich of Carbon/Diolen/Kevlar sheets pre-impregnated with epoxy resin and oven cured at high temperatures.
Those are the molds used for making the prototypes and our first production batch.

The body-gesture-controlled Scooterson has no acceleration lever or gear changer. It simply understands how fast you want to go. You start as you would riding a regular kick-scooter: first kick – gear one, second kick shifts to gear two, then simply sit for gear 3.
