Scoring the Build Your Own Experience

Tasked with performing a market analysis to see how the current General Motors family of Build Your Own brand experiences (vehicle configurators that can also be known as Build & Price) stack up against their OEM competitors I quickly realized I had no real way of quantifying them. I came up with eight categories to measure against, and then plotted the results on a spider graph to give an instant visual snapshot of the score. Overlaying our results with that of our competitors exposed our weaknesses and highlighted our strengths.

Adding up the value of each category gave an overall score and a true 360 degree insight. So a project that might look to increase the value of one category, for example Social, might find itself detracting the value of another category, for example Simplicity, and thus not actually increase the overall score. This type of insight proved invaluable.

This type of analysis can go beyond vehicle configurators and be applied to virtually any web experience, removing or adding categories as it makes sense.
