The Box Project - Tidy Desk

Each student on my course were given the same plans and materials to build a wooden box - this part of the project helped us improve our technical skills. Once we all had our identical ash boxes we were told to customise them and give them a new use and identity.

I turned my box into a desk tidy, aimed at students in school or university with the need to organise their work, desk or room.

Tidy Desk is made from ash, mdf and veneered mdf, with a wax and painted finish. The natural wood contrasts nicely with the bold green colour. At 450 x 270 x 160mm “Tidy Desk” fits comfortably on a tabletop and is big enough to store a4 paper and more. Inspiration for the design has been taken from designer Karim Rashid – it is influenced by his bright colour palette and use of lines and geometry.
Finished Box Project - Tidy Desk. Includes letter shelf and cubby hole in the legs. Accented green details contrast against natural wood.
With the lid open you can see the box can hold A4 paper and other items very comfortably. The notebook and letters stay on their shelf.
