Group project
Year: 2011

In 2007 began construction of the school complex Ithuba Skills College in nearby slums Magagula Heights on the southern outskirts of Johannesburg. Ithuba Skills College is alternative to government schools which are in catastrophic condition. Ithuba have the same curriculum as state schools and it is free, but one class can only have 25 students. Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana is the first from the non German speaking countries who joined the construction of complex Ithuba Skills College in the 2009/10 academic year. Their task was to design and build a classroom and library, which also serves the surrounding residents.

The project has processed a group of 20 students of higher classes under the direction of four full academic tutors through whole year. First semester was devoted to learning about the country, its history, culture, art and the geographical, economic and social specificities and through second semester there were preparations, practical workshops and raising funds for construction. The facility is simple designed and uses cheaper materials accessible to local populations, which shows that even with cheap materials they can build high-quality accommodations.

Our task was to design book that presents the whole process and final result. It was printed in 300 copies.
During resarch of material and project presentation we decided to use natural materials, with the hand-made look and playfully but simple content. There is a large number of phases, which are mostly displayed with photographs.

Paper format is 20x22cm. Binding takes place across the format, 4.5 cm inside from the left edge. The book is surrounded by hard cover through the opening from right to left. The book includes photos, scheme for time course, graphic representation of geography, plans, etc.. We used natural materials.
Next few pages show sample pages from the book. As it is shown timeline runs through every page. Page numbers appear random at the sam place but not on every page. Pictures of final results at the end of the book are in coloures and bigger in order to draw viewers attention.

Picture subtitles are placed usually at the page bottom and all together due to several pictures placed together. Right next to them is a small map that shows which number represents photography. It is easy to find and link to right one.
