Heaven is falling

This project is also part of my end of the year exhibition, Senses. To link my pieces in the ‘Smell’ category, I wanted to carry on with the idea of having flowers on the fabric. I wanted to work with cyanotype ever since I did a one-day course in Brazil. I fell in love with the technique and when I found out that it was possible to use it on fabric I was really excited. Initially I wanted the fabric to be larger, but unfortunately I didn’t have enough chemicals to proceed with the initial idea. I then ended up readjusting the size of it.

The concept behind the piece was when I think of heaven, I think of a place full of flowers with vibrant colours and a really relaxing place, which is the total opposite of the modern life of today. The idea is that earth once was heaven where there weren't too much noise, or pollution. It was just people and nature, and now it seems like heaven has fallen, as in it was "destroyed".
I first did some experiments on smaller pieces of fabric to make sure of how much time I should leave it out in the sun and if the result would turn out better using real flowers or have them cut out from acetate paper. The first fabric sample is my logo and the second are flowers, The experiments resulted in using real flowers instead of the acetate cut-outs because as you can see on the first image the pen strokes are visible in the print, which was not the result I had in mind.
The idea was to have the illusion of flowers falling and use the palm tree leaf to link back to my previous piece I did in the ‘Smell’ category.
