Final Portraits

I have always had an obsession with looking at the obituarypages in the newspapers and at how the wealthy and not so well to doSingaporeans advertise their relatives’ deaths in Singapore. From the ultraglossy full-page colour pages that the wealthy take up to the 10 cm black andwhite ones that most do, they showcase a wealth of information of the deceased, from their status in society(number of obituaries dedicated to them) their lastoccupation(sometimes) and their sartorial choice of clothes amongst others.
Culledfrom obituary notices in the papers, it examines stereotypes of beauty even indeath as the artist identifies and puts together obituaries in similar attire. The images have been categorized into suits, tops with floral prints, collatedand superimposed together and blown up as cheeky commentaries on beauty even inthe afterlife. It serves as a tongue in cheek social commentary on the humancondition, of fitting into cliches that extends even into their notion ofbeauty in death.
