Interactive digital products and environments
for Flaminio Bertoni Museum.

This book presents my M.Sc. Thesis project about interaction design and technologies for cultural heritage.

A museum is a complex communication system, whose diverse elements and players contribute to build its meaning. Good planning and accurate coordination of these different elements are fundamental for creating a clear narration, one that visitors can fully understand and that enables them to grasp and value that meaning.
Hence, the communication designer plays here the role of a content translator, a director of the interaction between the user and the cultural institution.

Within this perspective, new technologies get crucial role in designing scenarios for the use of exhibition centres which may aspire to be miscellaneous, multi-layered, multi-medial and user-tailored, in order to create more inclusive and fulfilling experiences.

The project Créateur de Formes aims at investigating and designing usage solutions for appraising the heritage of Flaminio Bertoni Museum in Varese, Italy.
The first chapters of this survey are focused on the evolution of the concept of the museum over time and on its contemporary features. Then, a case studies anthology identifies several museum typologies and analyse them from two points of view: the adoption of new technologies as main drivers for the user experience and content choices within biographical permanent collections.
The third section of the thesis provides an overall evaluation of Flaminio Bertoni Museum: its history, current user journey, critical points and opportunities related to a possible new opening in Volandia (Malpensa Hub).

The final output consists in a redefinition of the user journey and the design of two new tools for interacting with and exploring the exhibition. The first overlaps material and digital, by integrating in one single device the functions of catalogue, guide and content activator, which interacts with the collection itself (presented here). The second project, instead, singles out the meaning of “community” around the museum, and explores the power of data visualization in sorting out narrative complexity.
