Cultural Billboard

For this project, we were encouraged to explore type as shape and the relationships created when creating the forms.  We also explored and experimented with how images convey meaning and how do methods such as cropping and focus change the original intent, along with the contrast of pattern and color to help form the overall composition.

Final Billboard
In my final design, I used the last composition and the pattern from the first composition, as that kind of pattern is often seen in Cambodian culture.  Most cambodian materials are often simple, yet intricate and have these tight, repeated patterns that often form an underlying movement of shapes.  Instead of using orange, I used a grey, velvet color for the material to contrast against the hands.  For the focal point, I overlayed a cambodian symbol on top of the hands to represent peace and unity, a moral that Cambodia often follows in their religious practice.  In relation to this, I put an image of a buddhist church and temple behind the typography forms, as Cambodia is also known for their beautiful architecture.
