An Ode To Pompeii

An Ode To Pompeii is a celebration of the beauty and sophistication of the art and craft of the people that once inhabited it. Once a beautiful and thriving Roman city, is now a distant memory covered in metres of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 C.E. A.D. Pompeii may be best known for it’s destruction rather that it’s creativity, but, perhaps, surprisingly the Art and Culture of the Roman City continues to influence us today. I aim to evoke a sense of awe and wonderment for these lost treasures, contrasting washed out muted tones with rich terracotta’s and blacks, further enhanced by textural layering, urging it’s viewer to indulge in it’s curiosity for what is hidden within my imagery. Roman Gods and Goddesses are seen upon second glance, the Gods which once protected Pompeii’s households, a testament to the faith of the people and the rich culture they once immersed themselves in.
