This project is the perfect example of a prolonged project that evolves through its consumption and use. This hammock took a span of two years to complete to its present form, as its been modified to be used as a low seating space for my house.

The initial plan was to make a hammock that would be hung from the top, making it look like a cocoon. The were supposed to be two parts to the hammock, where the divider would be where the person would sit and the space below would be used for storage.

I used seven pieces of 20 foot bamboo strips for the exterior, and two 2 feet solid bamboo blocks that were interlocked for the seating and the base. I nailed one end of the bamboo strips to the poles, tightening it using jute ropes while the other end was tied together on the top, where the rope would be tied and hung from the ceiling.
I then started weaving cane in between the bamboo , giving the exterior a surface as a backrest. Weaving the cane took a lot of time as there was 3 kg worth of cane that needed to be weaved. The cane had to be first dipped in water for five minutes for it to bend easily and then needed to be weaved in a criss cross manner. I added few strips of cane vertically to give more support while weaving
As I continued weaving I realised the base was too big for someone to sit on, so I chopped off the front half of the hammock so there would be more space for the legs while sitting. This made it easier for accessing the storage as well.
The entire concept of the hammock had to be changed as soon as I shifted to an apartment, where there were no hooks in the ceiling from where the hammock could hang, so I left the entire weaving process on hold. I finally succumbed to the hanging problem and cut off the bottom half of the hammock as well, so that it could sit on the ground evenly. I then completed the cane and added a light fixture in place of the rope, and added cushions on the base for seating.

The hammock was one project that changed and shifted forms as I shifted from place to place, yet following me wherever I go. It taught me many skills like weaving cane bending bamboo, and showed me how much patience is required for weaving something this big. I also learned the qualities and properties of cane, a material I had never used before. The hammock still lies in my room and is still being used today.
