Donburi (丼?, literally "bowl", also frequently abbreviated as "don", less commonly spelled "domburi") is a Japanese "rice bowl dish" consisting of fish, meat, vegetables or other ingredients simmered together and served over rice. Donburi meals are served in oversized rice bowls also called donburi. Donburi are sometimes called sweetened or savory stews on rice.

I made this illustration for Donburi Ichiya (どんぶり壱屋 - Japanese Bowl Bar"Flavour in a Poster" competition and I was lucky enough to be a winner. Because they aimed for "japanese taste" in one image, so I tried to fuse the authentic ukiyo-e style from Edo Period just because, it was the age when donburi was introduced.

STEP 1: Inspired rom time-freezing photography because I like that excellent technique for capturing precious moment in time. If you google for "water spash photography", you'll see a lot of beautiful victims of time-freezing technique.
STEP 2: When I gave these base colors and it started to looks like a piece of weird objects in weird picture.
STEP 3: Detailing the egg yolk and I started to imagine the background colors.
STEP 4: Detailing the bowl, the ripple waves, make the wave-esque rice and eggwhite looks more splashy, put some birdies (why not? People love surrealism thing) and draw some random clouds.
STEP 5: Layouting. The top right japanese text read as: Donburi Ichiya and the bottom left is read as: Ontama Yakitori Don, one of the most popular menu at Donburi Ichiya, it's a grilled chicken topped with creamy onsen egg.
STEP 6: Enhancing the colors with Color Balance and Curve feature on Photoshop.
FINAL STEP: Texturing and I changed the text because I want it looks more authentic.
