Below is the design process I took to create this app icon.

 

 

When recreating the design for this app Icon, There were many factors that made this icon what it is today such as researching, positioning, experimenting and asking opinions of other people. The first thing I did in the design process was to choose the colours that represented YouTube the best. The colour used for the original iOS7 Youtube app icon was red. According for the colour emotion guide, red represented excitement, youthfulness and bold. I agree with how the designers used red to represent YouTube as it does bring excitement to the audience by the countless videos uploaded everyday for everyone to see.

Another color which I think represents YouTube well, is purple. Purple represents creativity, imagination, and being wise. The videos on YouTube users sees everyday, are definitely creative and producing videos require creativity and imagination. So the 2 colours Red and purple, and the 3 words, excitement, creativity and imagination, describe YouTube the best, without using too many colours to overthrow the design and words to over complicate what YouTube is.

 

 

Unfortunately with the iOS7 design trend, the background for the app icons are mostly single coloured, making it difficult to display many colours. So instead of using the 2 colours, I did some research and found a colour called magenta, which is a combination of red and purple. By doing this I can represent those 2 colours at the same time and as well as the words of what both of those colours mean.

With the object in the icon, I have decided to create an object that resembles a video camera. I chose the video camera because it is the most common device used to record videos with, even professionals use video cameras to record footage. With this icon meaning to be a professional design, having an object people mostly use to record videos with including professionals, will make the design even stronger.

The video camera I created includes a handle on top, and the lens to the right hand side of the camera. The positioning of the camera is moved more to the left and placing the lens on the right hand side of the camera gives it a asymmetrical balance, making it visually appealing. I chose to have the body of the video camera to be white as it plays an important part of the negative space that is commonly found for the iOS7 icon trend

 

 

In the camera, I have added a negative space of what is meant to be a play button. I used the play button because it is a button commonly used to play videos and music on a remote or a device as well as on the Internet. Having the play button in this app icon is also describing exactly what YouTube is. It is a site and application used to play videos.

And as mentioned before, some of the iOS 7 logos used negative space and contrast to define an object and the details in it, such as the lens on the end of the camera of the Facetime icon and the folds of the envelope on the letter of the E-mail icon. Following the trend and examples used for the iOS7 app icons, I decided to apply these design principles towards my design in order to keep it within the iOS7 trend.

All these elements and research combined together, is what has created my final app icon what it is right now.
