Sensodyne Splash Mouthwash CG Visuals

Bomper worked with GSK, DCA Design International and Geometry Global to create the key visual assets for the relaunch of Sensodyne’s new mouthwash. DCA developed the new bottle and brush, while Geometry developed the splash concept. We were tasked with visualising the new products and creating the CGI liquid splashes in full.
Geometry supplied concept mock-ups that we were required to follow rigorously. Finding a process that would allow us to match these concepts became a tricky task, as simulating the liquid didn’t give the sense of realism necessary for a still shot. We eventually developed a method of modelling the initial shape using single planes, which were then given thickness once we had the desired form. The sculpting tools within Cinema 4D were perfect for the task, allowing us to accurately match the given reference images by adding globules, surface tension and thin film splashes to simulate the way liquid would behave in real life.
Lighting for the splashes took some time, as several different concept images were supplied -- all with different lighting. We used three point lighting techniques with several white and black reflectors to give the final render the requisite dark edges and contrast within the splash. Setting up the scene using basic clay materials allowed us to perfect the lighting before switching the materials out for the liquid.
Transparencies were required for the final delivery, as the splashes had to be overlaid onto several different substrates and colours. The beauty of CG, however, meant that we were able to separate out each layer and create alpha channels to maintain object transparency. Several wet proofs of each splash image were supplied for final sign off before digital delivery of the files.
