Foot Operated Door Latch

Motivation:

The idea was to redesign the existing door latch such that it can be used by
amputees as well.
Other problem is particularly acute related to the knobs and handles employed on
doors in public restrooms and other such facilities which tend to collect germs.

Features:
The Foot pedal and the handle, on both sides of the door, operates synchornously
to push/pull open the door.
Can be installed on standard sized interior doors similarly as door knobs, with minimum
modifications in the door panel.
Estimated product cost : Rs. 1000 (with latch)

Process:
Concept exploration was followed by motion analysis of the mechanism and optimisation of
the same using anthropometric data.
3D modelling was done considering static loading analysis and DFMA.

Initial mock up was tested for functionality and needed modifications were done for the final prototype.
In the final prototype all parts were assembled on a standard size door neatly flushed to the surface.

1. Concept Exploration

2. Further modifications were done using SolidWorks -  Motion Analysis tools

3. Final mechanism for the product

4. Finalised dimensions using finite element analysis

5. Prototype
