Salt and Pepper Octopus

Salt and pepper was a project I worked on for ME115B. The assignment was to design and manufacture a kitchen ornamnet inspired by a particular industrial designer or brand.

I chose Alessi because of the bright colors and playful shapes. I wanted to design something in the form of an animal with a clean, industrial aesthetic that might fit in a modern kitchen enviornment.

I 3D modeled the design on CAD. It was my first time using Solidworks so I spent way too much time on this stage of the design process. When I was happy with the design I laser cut about 30 pieces of quarter inch acrylic. I attached the pieces with acrylic bonder. The final product was a stacked acrylic shaker that stood about 2.25 inches high.

I didn't have any experience with any advanced manufacting processes which really limited my design. It was really ugly and awkward but I liked my final portfolio.
