Matt Ince's profile

Design Innovation for Plastics - Heavy Load Carrier

Project Brief.

The breif described a product to be mainly made of plastic to demonstrate the strengths and
diversity of this material.
The theme of the breif was “refreshing design” which was open to interpretation.
Research was carried out into common themes within the media to discover problem areas nationally and internationally.
Once these problem areas had been established, concept and development began, to create solution products.

Final Design

The final design is a lifting and
carrying aid designed for commercial use. The strap means less bending of the back for the builder which
ultimately provides better health for the worker.

The Pair of Pincers acknowledges the difficulties in making numerous trips to maneuver blocks and bricks by providing a dual block carrying function.

Parts are easily replaced for a simple maintenance system. The plastic make-up of the product enables a quick wipe clean.

Product Design student reaches Finals of National Plastics Design Competition

Matthew Ince, a final year BA/BSc (Hons) product design student from the University of Huddersfield, has fought off tough opposition to become a finalist in a national plastics design competition, sponsored by international materials company, Bayer MaterialScience.

A total of 268 students from 24 universities initially registered an interest in the competition with 72 actually submitting an entry.

Following the first round of judging, the panel of judges whittled these down to just six finalists.

Matthew designed a pincer-shaped aid for safely lifting and carrying heavy building blocks on construction sites. Lightweight concrete blocks have suffered a decline in sales due to their high cost, resulting in an increase in the lifting and carrying of heavier concrete blocks by builders. This product would help deal with this occupational hazard and prevent builders damaging their backs.
