WHY IS SHOPPING THERAPEUTIC?

When in distress, I dress well, pull myself together and usually go for some tough shopping. Now the clichéd question, is it just me? And after some of my worthwhile negotiations, the answer is simple, I’m not alone. Being surrounded by so many people, we do tend to get into a lot of drama, sometimes its OKAY, sometimes rather cumbersome. So to get rid of the emotional downfall, we do some comfort buying or as some call it the ‘Retail therapy’ .

Who doesn’t like to indulge into some relaxation and rejuvenation? I do, obviously everyone does. Shopping happens within a change of moods and thoughts. Whether it’s just gazing at the windows, browsing sites online or going through racks at departmental stores, shopping is just mentally refreshing. And in my most recent research, it has been described that online shopping is like going on a mental vacation, as it’s a free activity needing no supervision. Breaks like these during work, are much needed. Apart from this spiritual freedom, shopping is also a great option when it comes to social bonding. Like once my friend told me that whenever she’s on a vacation she always likes to go shopping and there she connects with people with similar tastes or interests. How fun is that? This just doesn’t make you content but also helps in much savoir-faire about life. I also believe that buying something new just doesn’t cure gloominess but also helps to boost one’s creativity. Styling outfits and playing with different colours and textures. Such a STRESS-BUSTER.
The much I appreciate shopping, but point to be noted: It’s only good and therapeutic when done in equanimity. Beyond that you’ll soon be confessing to your shopaholism and paying off debts. Overdo in any consumption is unhealthy just like alcohol. When out of hand, it’s always a bad sign.
Every one of us deserves happiness. So when in distress, there’s no shame in Retail Therapy. If trying to be intellectual, ‘things’ can’t buy any of this but whom are we kidding? Everyone likes a bit of self gifting every now and then. Live example, myself. So if you’re one of ‘these’ kinds, you aren’t alone. I shall be with you, forever and always.
