Paint the Town Pink

To kick off a month of breast cancer awareness, the Asheville Citizen-Times and the region’s largest hospital system, Mission Health, partnered to host the community event Paint the Town Pink. The event was held on Thursday, October 7,2011 in the heart of downtown Asheville at Pack Square Park.

The park was awash in pink, and emotions ran high as hundreds of women (and men) gathered to honor and support breast cancer fighters, survivors and their caregivers. Thecelebration included remarks by cancer survivors, a city proclamation of Paint the Town Pink Day and a sunset concert. The event closed with volunteers andaudience members building Western North Carolina’s largest human pink ribbon.

"We are delighted that the Asheville Citizen-Times has taken leadership in involvin gand educating the community about breast cancer," said Karen Grogan, an oncology certified nurse and administrative director of Mission Health's oncology program. “It's important that people know the facts about breast cancer, and that they know that there are many, many women in our community —and men as well — who are not just breast cancer survivors, but breast cancer‘thrive-ers,’” said Grogan. "We need and want to share in their stories, and the Asheville Citizen-Times is making this possible."

A portion ofthe Pink October advertising proceeds were donated to underwrite a month of Ladies Night Out. Run through the Buncombe County Department of Health,LNO offers free mammograms, physicals and health education to uninsured or under insured women.
