Application - Interactive museum guide.

The brief

In today's day and age, a museum is more than a collection of dusty objects and antiquities. Museums actively try to share multicultural heritage with a large audience. Audio guides, booklets, brochures all try to make the experience more interactive. Pick an exhibit and think about how you can make the tour interactive and interesting by the means of your smartphone. You may break away from the existing style as long as it fits with the exhibit itself. Provide practical information such as the opening hours and the address. Be sure to promote the exhibit's catalog.

Find an interesting angle to guide the visitor through the art collection and create your own walking tour which lets the user explore the pieces in-depth. Last but not least, make up one interactive element supporting the exhibit as a whole.

The concept

The exhibit at hand is 'Faces then/Now', which features a collection of portrait paintings and photography. Since the hardest audience to attract are young adults, we decided to work with elements typical to their environment. The concept is simple: we are creating buzz by letting visitors discover the history of the selfie. We are walking them through the first painted self portraits in the 'Faces then' section before moving them along to more recent self portrait photography.

When a detail page is opened, we are providing the visitors with information about the pieces in a way they are used to nowadays. For every self portrait we have created a Twitter account, tweeting interesting facts about the life of that person including retweets by their wives, mistresses, bosses etc. (example here) This way a visitor can connect with the art at any time and read up and retweet any interesting facts they have discovered.

We want to create an interactive experience so at the end of the walking tour, visitors will have the opportunity to take a selfie with their smartphone and add it to our selfie wall near the end of the exhibit.

A part of the selfie timeline (right) leads to a Twitter-like detail page (left).
A livestream of the selfie wall (left) offers the possibility to add your own photo to it (right).
