Brief
Motif is a word used to describe the traditional elements found in the lore of particular folk groups and compare the folklore of various regions and cultures of the world. This project is about exploring various such cultural motifs and creating a motif that portrays me as an individual or brings out traits of my native city or country.
Analysis
As I am from Punjab and i am familiar with its culture I chose to represent the area in my own way.
Types of turbans which are common in punjab.
Types of moustache and beard punjabis have.
Different facial expressions.
Things they say and how they say it.
Ideation
Initially I thought of using already existing signs and symbols on vehicles and give them a meaning. For example I saw a crosshair and thought of a qoute "Set a target but not humans"
Another idea was using typo which has some significance like Ambulance is printed like a mirror image to be read in your cars rear view mirror
Concept
Usually people think of Punjabis as people who are loud, foodies and for their good hospitality. I kind of used the same stereotypical perceptions and converted them into humorous motifs to represent the Punjabi culture. Sometimes people make fun of how Punjabis eat, drink lassi all the time or get angry. Despite clearing all these things I used them in a polite manner to make Punjabis feel god about it and take it lightly as it is part of our nature.
I think accepting those traits make us a better Punjabi. Being open hearted, foodies, fun loving but Punjabis are also calm, intellectual and peaceful people most of the times.
People might not realize that until they know a Punjabi closely. I have highlighted the same features of their personality and personified them in a humorous way.
Final Idea
I finalised on the idea of making a series of motifs on sardaars and punjabis. I am going to add humour to things they usually say while driving etc. Also I plan on making things which can be hung in vehicles like a Punjabi woman with parandi etc...
