Design for Renewal

There is no better way to know the needs of a client that to be completely immersed in their company and culture.

From 2014-2015 I had the privilege of being involved in the daily workings of the Renewal Center. My task was to understand and improve the current communications as well as help develop a sustainable communication system.

Design deliverables included a newsletter, appeal and reply slips, printed receipts, year end report, event specific invitations and posters and a labeling system. Formal guidelines for visual identity and photography needs were also developed to guide future efforts.

Considering the nature of the organization, frugality and efficiency were of primary importance in both production and appearance. All items make maximum use of standard paper sizes and low cost printing. The tone of design is understated and sophisticated without being stark or pretentious. Aesthetically this was accomplished with utilitarian approach to layout and minimal color scheme. The simple and clear typographic hierarchy and straightforward black and white photography did not become overly graphic or sentimental.

Looking toward the future a simple grid and template system was also developed for both English and Chinese layouts to maintain consistency among future freelancers or volunteers.
In retrospect this experience of “living in the skin” of the client was invaluable in providing a suitable solution. It was an exercise in restraint in that more elegant or beautiful options were set aside for the sake of tone, function and future consistency. I am better for this experience both as a designer and a human and would highly recommend such a journey to those willing to take it.
