UK Uncut action, Liverpool 7th January 2012
direct action from grassroots movement highlighting alternatives to the government's spending cuts
UK Uncut activists visit a series of shops in Liverpool city centre. The aim was to protest against cuts to public services; they argued cuts would be unnecessary if corporations did not employ massive tax avoidance policies. First up was an occupation and protest outside of the HSBC Bank on Lord Street, which closed the branch for two hours. Then the group moved and occupied Top Shop, where security closed the store and the peaceful protestors sang songs, making their point heard and left after 20 minutes. Finally, there was a whistle stop tour through the Liverpool One shopping area, stopping briefly at Vodafone, NatWest Bank, before a small celebration of conga dancing in the aisles of Tescos on Bold Street.
