boston - massachusetts | office / residential mixed-use building
“The Urban Capsule” located in the heart of Boston, MA was a team project designed by H. Miller and K. Hoerath. The building is places on the edge of downtown; and therefore, creates a transition from the Old Seaport Realm into more dense urban housing developments. It is a mixed use building that explores interlocking of commercial and residential spaces not only on a horizontal understanding, but also vertical aspect. The “boxes” of private spaces are pushed and pulled in order to create communal public spaces. By doing so, the core of the building becomes an atrium that is important for circulation and natural air flow throughout the building. As seen in the following drawing, designing through a lens of environmental sensitivity was very important for the project.
