Rope International, Chennai is a social enterprise involved in developing sustainable and eco friendly products like table mats, runners, rugs, baskets,etc mainly using local available raw materials like banana bark, sambu,etc employing local semi skilled artisans and weavers thereby creating livelihood for them and preserving the traditional crafts.
My Interest towards natural fibre made me take up this internship where I was exposed to completely new set of materials with new properties which give interesting textures when it goes up and down. It was an extraordinary learning experience of working with the weavers and the materials.
The below are the rugs developed using coir and sambu ( elephant grass ) during my internship.
Below is the collection of table mats and runners developed at ROPE during my internship. Taking ANJARA PETTI ( Indian Spice box ) as my inspiration and going with the color trend and making the best use of the raw material available and working with the given set of constraints I came up with these set of collection which were displayed at NY NOW Home Decor exhibition at New York, August 2015.
