URBAN ELDERLY COMMUNITY CENTER

A community center is a public space that provides basic needs and services for the local community. As Pudu is an aging city, the programs offer in the community center is mainly based on the urban elderly. The objective of the community center is to encourage the public to utilize the space and programs provided. Thus, it would become a platform that could revive the prosperous era of Pudu.

During the 70s, Pudu was a very liveliness town which was full of shops and small enterprises. However, in the 21st century, Pudu seems to become a forgotten town where it stops developing and the economy is declining slowly. It is not hard to find out that elderly people is the largest portion of the population in Pudu nowadays. That is because most of the new generations were moved out from Pudu. Therefore, the Elderly Community Center is designed to supports the local elderly citizens by providing them various kinds of programs and facilities.

Time has shown their present in those beautiful vintage buildings by washing out their finishes. Those retro signboards and molded old walls offer unique textures and reminiscent mood. The site locates at the Jalan Sayur, which is one of the oldest food streets in Kuala Lumpur with over 60 years of history, named ‘Wai Sek Kai’ (为食街). Therefore, the design of the community center is integrated with the elements of Pudu and Jalan Sayur.
